Summary

Matthew Perry has had a successful career while battling addition。 This memoir doesn’t focus on his career。 Like his life, this book focuses on his struggles with addition and his hopes for his life throughout the battle。 Like so many others have mentioned, he does often come off as arrogant。 However, despite this, I did find his story interesting to listen to。

While I do appreciate his candidacy and believe it truly was a tell all, it misses the mark to resonate with the average person。 He holds himself above everyone while whining how unfair his addiction plight has been…not buying it。 Love friends and Chandler Bing…sadly this explains the addiction but fails to unveil a good person at heart。

This book sucked me in initially, but then it got super repetitive。 Obviously, his life has been consumed by the "big terrible thing," and that consumption overtook this book。 Writing this was probably huge in his recovery process, but his struggles with addiction became too much for me to handle about halfway through the book。 This book sucked me in initially, but then it got super repetitive。 Obviously, his life has been consumed by the "big terrible thing," and that consumption overtook this book。 Writing this was probably huge in his recovery process, but his struggles with addiction became too much for me to handle about halfway through the book。 。。。more

I took one star off due to the amount of times he mentioned how he dated julia Roberts or simply said julia roberts at any given moment 。 His addiction is so very sad and had no clue it’s to the level it is 。

Wonderful (albeit, terribly sad) memoir leaning very heavily on the "Big Terrible Thing。" Really amazed that he opened up so much to the world about the depths of his addictions, it's heartbreaking and admirable to see how much he hopes his own failures can help others。 I was especially fond, as any Friends fan will be, of all the inside scoop on their relationships, and set life, with his own struggles woven in。 His specifics on where he was in life during certain episodes will have me watching Wonderful (albeit, terribly sad) memoir leaning very heavily on the "Big Terrible Thing。" Really amazed that he opened up so much to the world about the depths of his addictions, it's heartbreaking and admirable to see how much he hopes his own failures can help others。 I was especially fond, as any Friends fan will be, of all the inside scoop on their relationships, and set life, with his own struggles woven in。 His specifics on where he was in life during certain episodes will have me watching so differently the next (and the next and the next) time I watch。 A lot of respect for him airing all this out, and a really really beautiful ending。 Truly hope his story remains that way。 。。。more

This book feels more like a book length 4th Step searching and fearless moral inventory which, while honest, leaves the reader wondering why Perry feels compelled to share it in such excruciating detail。 It’s a wonder he’s still alive。 Seriously hoping he finds some peace and continuing sobriety。

Listened on Libby and to hear Matt tell his story was amazing。 Love him。 Loved the book! I laughed and cried。 Could the book BE any better?! No ❤️

This is a raw, honest story of an addict who happens to be a famous actor from my favorite TV show of all time。 While the structure and repetition of similar stories didn’t work for me, I am still glad I read this book and that it was written。 I really (really) hope Matthew Perry stays sober, finds a level of happiness and keeps a support group around him。 What an incredible, incredibly sad, ultimately contentedly hopeful story。

I really liked this book。 Included a bit too much religion for my taste but I understand that comes with recovery。 Still worth the read!

What a sad life Matthew has lived, but man has issues。

Not the biggest of friends fan here but found this very compelling

Great book! Felt like a genuine share in a 12 step meeting!

Could this book BE more different than what I expected? I love the TV show Friends。 When it originally aired in the 1990's I was in college and spent every Thursday night with my cousin Sharon watching the funny sextet of friends。 I was even given a nickname of one of the characters during my college years。 I eagerly snagged a library copy of this book and expected Matthew Perry to talk about his childhood in Ottawa, his rise to fame, his addictions and backstage info about his time on Frien Could this book BE more different than what I expected? I love the TV show Friends。 When it originally aired in the 1990's I was in college and spent every Thursday night with my cousin Sharon watching the funny sextet of friends。 I was even given a nickname of one of the characters during my college years。 I eagerly snagged a library copy of this book and expected Matthew Perry to talk about his childhood in Ottawa, his rise to fame, his addictions and backstage info about his time on Friends。 I also expected the memoir to have some humorous bits。 But it is not a funny read。It's actually quite disturbing as he details his decades-long addiction to drugs and alcohol and that despite his celebrity, famous friends/loves and lavish lifestyle, he remained the awkward boy searching for love, respect and meaning in his life。 This memoir is raw and alarming and sadly not well written with repetition and a choppy delivery that jumped back and forth in time。 As I read, I often forgot it was about the guy who played Chandler Bing because he felt so different from the person I imagined the actor to be in real life。 Perry is blunt about his mistakes, struggles and the destruction his body endured due to his addictions, but it will be quite awhile before I can watch Friends without thinking of what Perry was going through at the time or if in certain scenes/seasons he was high or drunk。I'm sad that Matthew Perry sounds like a self-centred arse who often blamed his choices and addictions on others and the way he spoke about some of the women in his life (Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston) was icky at best。 The only 'Friend' to add to his memoir was Lisa Kudrow (aka Phebes) who wrote the foreword, but it felt forced, lacked a personal feel and made me wonder if the other Friends have kept their distance from him over the years。 He talks about his many celebrity connections and roles。 And I'll admit that I was interested to know more about his comments about Keanu Reeves that got so much press when the book first came out。 But no explanation is given as to why Perry wondered why fellow Canuck Reeves was still alive while River Phoenix had to die。 If it was meant as a joke, I didn't get it。 Matthew Perry is a flawed person who continued to make the same mistakes in life and love。 Now at 53 years old, he is lucky to be alive and I am glad he continues to win the daily war with his addictions。 I respect the honesty which he told his story, but I didn't enjoy this book or finding out the person behind one of my favourite Friends isn't more like his lovable, flawed and funny character on screen。 I will continue to root for him to succeed at his sobriety and will enjoy watching Friends when I need a pick me up。 。。。more

I am the biggest Friends fan, and have loved Matthew Perry forever。 I knew about his struggles, but I didn’t know how long he has been struggling and the extend of it。 This is a dark but an important read。

What。 A。 Book。 Read this。

Lori Mcmurphy

This was a good hard read。 So grateful he fights every day for his sobriety。

Perry does a wonderful job explaining the seriousness of addiction as a disease and the battles one faces to try to stay sober。 It’s amazing that he is still alive and I wish him well on his journey。

Charlene Evans

Mice’s feelings about this book。 Very honest narrative but stuck up/poor me at the same time。 Writing could have been better - got confused a few times。

;) 。。。more

This is an addiction memoir, more than about Friends or any other professional part of Perry’s life。 It’s well done, honest, and helps destigmatize addiction, which he reminds us thrives in secret。 But man does he feel bad for himself。 The overarching theme is “I’m grateful for all the good stuff, but I’ve had a super hard life because I can’t make good decisions and have a childhood fear of abandonment。”

This was an excellent, raw memoir full of his ups and downs with addiction。 Fans of Friends will be astounded by how much he endured & how he was so funny on that show while going through so much。 A great audiobook narrated by the author, I would recommend it to his fans and/or anyone struggling with or have a loved one struggling with addiction。

Heartbreaking。 If Matthew wasn't in Friends, there's a good chance he wouldn't have gone down a very dark path of drugs and alcohol they way he did。 The pressure of fame and being a celebrity is a cautious tale here。 Matt may have money and fame, and always being known as Chandler, but the one thing he'll never have that he always wanted is a family- wife and children because of this addictions。 He will always feel alone, and money and fame will never give him what he wants deep inside。 His writ Heartbreaking。 If Matthew wasn't in Friends, there's a good chance he wouldn't have gone down a very dark path of drugs and alcohol they way he did。 The pressure of fame and being a celebrity is a cautious tale here。 Matt may have money and fame, and always being known as Chandler, but the one thing he'll never have that he always wanted is a family- wife and children because of this addictions。 He will always feel alone, and money and fame will never give him what he wants deep inside。 His writing is engaging and very easy to read。 His personality jumps from the pages, and his honesty will cause a lump in your throat。 Also he reveals he wasn't the first choice for Chandler。 Craig Bierko, his one time friend was, and the studio wanted Craig for Chandler。 But Craig decided to take another role as a the star of another show, coincidentally with the word Friends in the title (big mistake on his part but great for Matthew)。 Because of that, Matthew was given the gift of Chandler through either fate or luck, and the rest is history。 I don't think I can watch Friends that same way again, especially how Matthew explains his addiction during the 10 year run。 Also the most endearing and special thing in these pages is how the case of Friends are really truly friends then and now, and always supportive of Matthew, who loves them all。 Must read for those who enjoy celebrity biographies that are brutally honest and open。 。。。more

I've always liked Matthew Perry, especially on FRIENDS as Chandler Bing。 What I didn't realize was how naturally funny, creative and smart he is。 He has suffered for most of his life with addiction problems of alcohol and drugs。 He probably should have died more than once but for some reason, he has survived。 Maybe his story will help others as he has tried to do through his own struggles。 I wish him good luck in the future and I hope some day he finds a wife and has a family all his own。 I've always liked Matthew Perry, especially on FRIENDS as Chandler Bing。 What I didn't realize was how naturally funny, creative and smart he is。 He has suffered for most of his life with addiction problems of alcohol and drugs。 He probably should have died more than once but for some reason, he has survived。 Maybe his story will help others as he has tried to do through his own struggles。 I wish him good luck in the future and I hope some day he finds a wife and has a family all his own。 。。。more

I watched Friends all the way through for the first time when it became available on HBO Max。 While the series admittedly did NOT age well (so much racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, fatphobia, etc), I completely understand its draw to 20/30 somethings as they’re trying to figure out how to adult。 I think that feeling, and the feeling you get when you finally meet your people, is timeless。 I was fairly young when it originally aired, so I didn’t really remember hearing about Matthew Perr I watched Friends all the way through for the first time when it became available on HBO Max。 While the series admittedly did NOT age well (so much racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, fatphobia, etc), I completely understand its draw to 20/30 somethings as they’re trying to figure out how to adult。 I think that feeling, and the feeling you get when you finally meet your people, is timeless。 I was fairly young when it originally aired, so I didn’t really remember hearing about Matthew Perry’s (Chandler Bing) struggles with addiction。 In his memoir, he is completely candid about the ugliest parts of the disease。 He took us through the darkest parts of his addiction and filled us with pockets of hope when he would get help。 Though I’ve never personally struggled with addiction, I felt he did an excellent job of showing how no matter how strong the desire to change, sometimes the addiction wins。 The one part that I didn’t like so much is the objectification of the women he dates。 He clearly has a lot to unpack about love and relationships, and the way he discussed the women in his life kinda gave me the ick。 Some things are better left unsaid, and that bit was kinda one of them。 Otherwise, I thought his addiction story was heartbreaking yet inspiring。 It’s serious yet very funny at times。 I loved hearing about his work to help other addicts find their recovery。 It is my hope that his story resonates and works to destigmatize addiction。 It is a disease and requires an amazing support system to overcome。 Obviously a lot of tough topics are covered in this story, so be sure to check out trigger warnings before diving in。 。。。more
